Individual Therapy vs Support Groups?

The essence of psychotherapy is connection. One-on-one individual therapy can help you develop a special and close relationship with a therapist you can connect to, someone who “gets” you. Groups can also offer a great circle of support and caring while working through whatever you are trying to deal with, sometimes as an adjunct to individual therapy. Learning that your therapist “has your back,” even in a group setting, can help you discover new ways of being with others. Groups can help you:

  • Forge new relationships
  • Feel less alone
  • Learn how others cope with thoughts, situations, and feelings in productive ways
  • Help you help others as you help yourself
  • Practice new actions and responses
